High Desert Summer Events

JM Perez By JM Perez2 min read943 views

Early this afternoon, we took the kids to the movies to watch Despicable Me 2 at the Civic Plaza 12. Today being the released date, all seats were sold out for the 4:50 PM showtime. So, I went ahead and purchased four tickets for the next one, which was at 6:10 PM. What to do in the meantime? I asked myself. As I looked across from the theater, I saw a Music Band as well as lots and lots of people gathered around food, clothing and accessories stands. We later found out that they are all part of Summer events happening in the High Desert.

While keeping the kids busy until it was time to watch the movie (which we very much liked); I enjoyed some live Pop and Country Music from the band Under Construction.

A Drive Down Memory Lane

EPEngineer By EPEngineer2 min read691 views

Yesterday being a warm day, we all agreed to drive down to Pomona, CA primarily for sightseeing and some vintage finds. On our way to our destination, we drove past places which meant so much to us.

Almost six years ago, my Son was born at this wonderful Hospital.

I spent the first three years of my Life, after High School, at the YMCA while attending college. The two last top windows on the picture used to be the room I occupied during my stay there.

The Metrolink Train Station with other connecting transits such as the Omnitrans, Foothill Transit and the Metrolink Connect Shuttle. This being a block away from the YMCA made every destination available to me.

The beautiful art work below is from La Bomba Vintage Shop. This was my second time visiting the shop since we moved out of Pomona, CA six years ago. The shop like everything else in the city has evolved and each visit brings in new discoveries like the following art creations there.

At times I find that a walk thru memory lane brings in new memories and allows us to enjoy part of our past. This places have always brought me enjoyment and wonder and as they change and the area evolves I will be vigilant to the changes and keep the memories fresh in my heart and mind. I hope that you all have favorite places that bring you and your family joy.

Pomona, Sweet Pomona!

While touring the three stories of the Pomona Antique Mart, I found a lovely vintage statue for my garden! How wonderful. It’s a Little girl gardening with a duck (they are both looking at their empty planter). I am thinking about painting it; then again, I might just leave it as is. I guess, time will tell. I am looking forward to displaying it for Spring, along side the Gnomes collection, when my beautiful garden will be in full bloom.

Prior to leaving, we visited Cheryl’s Antiques, which is one of the shops across the street from Pomona Antique Mart. We’ve been there once or twice before, without giving it much attention as it was always closing time or we were in a rush rush situation. Today, fortunately for us, we had a little time to spare and we used it wisely.

I found a very old and rare vintage Christmas Tree Hugger amidst a pile of vintage Christmas decorations. As much as I love the vintage Christmas Pixie Elf Knee Hugger (and held back the urge to buy one); I am grateful that my patience paid off and I found something even more special. This particular Tree Hugger made my day.

My boys, on the other hand, were more interested in Micro Machines and found a couple that caught their eyes.

Old Town Victorville, CA

Established November 11, 1926, Route 66 carried refugees from the Dust Bowl to California, where the wretched sought hope for survival and the strength to carry on. John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath told of the heart-breaking story of these people who trusted the road to take them somewhere – anywhere – they could survive the Great Depression.

Vintage 3 Faces Toothpick Holder

EPEngineer By EPEngineer2 min read909 views

Excited and anxious for a relaxed and fun afternoon; we took a trip up into the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains. We had planned a trip to Crestline, CA and today was that day, rain or shine. Regardless of the winding roads and the motion sickness, Crestline is a city we fell in love with four years ago. Crestline is a small town. It’s charming, welcoming and it feels like a World of its own. The sights are breath-taking, the locals are friendly, helpful and the shops are full of little treasures. When it comes to buying Vintage/Antique pieces, this is one of the places we trust and go to. We’ve been in luck so far.

Our first stop was at the Garden Shed & Co. Shop. The kids instantly fell in love with a Cowboy Screw Sculpture which we ended up buying. Myself on the other hand, who is into rare Vintage Wrenches, added a new tool to my collection: a Vintage Garden Pruner. From there we proceeded to My Favorite Things, where we met shop owner Yolanda and stayed a while admiring her huge selection of treasures. Read about her shop here.

At the Crest Forest Senior Citizens Thrift Shop, I bought a Nautical Wooden Decorative Anchor as well as a Three Faces  Toothpick Holder for our collection (this piece is also known as Three Graces, Three Sisters and Three Fates). It is from the 1960’s and it is a reproduction by L.G. Wright. The original was produced by Duncan Miller in the Late 1880’s. What fascinates Joan the most is the history behind the art work.

After remembering taking some courses in Philosophy and learning about “Three Graces and Fates” in High School; my wife did some research to refresh her memory (knowledge does not update itself). She finally stumbled upon an article while searching for additional information on this Toothpick Holder. The article was written by Zsuzsanna E. Budapest on The Fates and Destiny. While recounting a life changing incident that happened to her and to which she now sees as fate; she proceeded by giving us a bigger picture of the Mythological Goddesses. They are Females portrayed as Fates and Sisters. It is said that when they are in good spirits, they become the Three Graces and when angered, they are called the Furies.
