Almond Tree Blossoming

JM Perez By JM Perez2 min read594 views

We have this huge Sweet Almond Tree in our front yard that we love. Here at home, it is the first tree to flower after Winter followed by Saucer Magnolia and Purpleleaf Cherry Plum. For the past three years, the Almond Tree started flowering as early as January (lasting only two weeks, thanks to our high winds).
The White flowers are so beautiful and it’s always a delight watching them bloom indoors in a vase. In just a few days, honeybees will be heading towards the blossom, collecting pollen.

The tree produces Sweet Almonds during Summer and we had a good harvest in 2007. During the following years, the crows eat almost everything before we got a chance to harvest any. Sometimes we are lucky to find a few and other times all we find are scattered shells on the ground, waiting for us to dispose of.
At times during the cooler Summer evenings we pull out extra chairs, gather underneath the tree as it provides shade and we admire Nature while having interesting conversations.

With great weather and Spring rapidly approaching, the weeds are coming on strong. Have you noticed how bold weeds stand in a garden? They literally rob a yard of its natural beauty. I love Spring because it reminds me of new beginnings. It’s always the perfect time to start something and for us, it’s the best time to start weeding and ridding the yard of ‘bad seeds’ as well as getting it ready for fun Summer entertainment, gatherings and activities.

My beautiful bouquet of Almond Blossoms now sits pretty on my Fireplace Mantel. I love those delicate white and pink flowers. The Jug is one I bought from the 99¢ Only Stores ten years ago (along with a matching Sugar Set). Just in case you are wondering, what you see above the Almond Arrangement is a 1975 Vintage Kitchen Book Holder, movable thanks to some springs on each side. We spray painted it white from its original Honey Oak color.

Thanks to the awesome weather today, we made good progress hand wedding early in the afternoon around a few garden beds in the backyard. We are allowing weeds to grow on a designated area to give a chance to the kids to go Ladybug hunting, which are often found around grassy fields.

Since my dear husband has been craving some Mongolian Grill, we went to The Mall of Victor Valley, which is the closest location to us (the Restaurant is located in the Food Court). I love the fact that they make it easy for individuals to create their own stir-fry. We also spent a few hours at Barnes and Noble, reading books with the kids and looking around for some great Human Anatomy books for Children. I purchased a few books prior to leaving. We all had a marvelous time today and I hope to remember to set the clocks forward for daylight saving time.

Kenner Vintage Dolls

Here at Home we love to collect things; new or old, we love them all as long as they make our hearts sing. My husband collects Mechwarrior pieces. My Son collects Hot Wheels Muscle Cars. My Daughter and I love the Strawberry Shortcake Dolls. However, while I am old-fashioned, she is new age and we are both happy Collectors.

Growing up, I owned a few of these gorgeous dolls. I used to wonder how something so small could be so perfect? If you own one of these beauties, then you know that they are beautifully made. My Father traveled a lot and while serving his country abroad, he always returned home with lots of souvenirs for my siblings and I. I remember how people made fun of us back in 1990 because we were all sporting the Converse All-Stars with Multi-Colored Shoelaces. I guess we were cool back then without realizing how cool we were.

My parents didn’t believe in quantity, but they did in quality. I wasn’t a spoiled Child, but I had the best. I had a few dolls, which I really liked and some I am sure, are stored at my Parents’ house. As of today, I have managed to collect all of the original Strawberry Shortcake Dolls and pets by Kenner, except for one:

  • Strawberry Shortcake with Custard, Cat
  • Blueberry Muffin with Cheesecake, Mouse
  • Orange Blossom with Marmalade, Butterfly
  • Lemon Meringue with with Frappe, Frog
  • Raspberry Tart with Rhubarb, Monkey
  • Huckleberry Pie with Pupcake, Dog
  • Lime Chiffon with Parfait, Parrot
  • Angel Cake with Souffle, Skunk
  • Almond Tea with Marza, Panda
  • Crêpe Suzette with Éclair, Poodle
  • Mint Tulip with Marsh Mallard, Duck
  • Cafe Ole wit Burrito, Donkey
  • Apricot with Hopsalot, Bunny
  • Butter Cookie with Jelly, Bear
  • Apple Dumpling with Tea Time, Turtle
  • Cherry Cuddler with Gooseberry, Goose
  • Lem N Ada with Sugar, Woofer
  • Peach Blush with Melonie Belle, Lamb
  • Plum Puddin’ with Elderberry, Owl
  • Purple Pie Man with Captain, Cackle
  • Sour Grapes with Dregs, Snake
  • Banana Twirl with Berrykin, Banana

The babies are gorgeous. I just need Banana Twirl with Berrykin, Banana to complete my Collection (she’s rare, expensive and hard to find). My favorites are Café Olé, Huckleberry Pie, Peach Blush and Plum Puddin’.

A Few Vintage Finds

As a promise to our Son, we drove to Downtown Pomona this afternoon to check out the shops.
We went early to give ourselves plenty of time to go around each individual aisle. We started at the Olde Towne Pomona Antique Mall, where I ended up buying a vintage 1978 Carol Rardon figurine (made of plaster).

We then proceeded to the Pomona Antique Mart, where I picked up a huge and stunning Copper Wall Shelf Sconce before heading to Cheryl’s Antiques.

At Cheryl’s Antiques I bought a vintage 1950’s Roldan Doll (dressed as a Flamenco dancer). She originates from and was produced in Barcelona, Spain from the 1950’s to early 1970’s as touristy souvenirs and she is available in fun variety of designs. She has a gorgeous ruffle dress, a beautiful and remarkable facial features and holds felt castanets in her hands with a few pom poms hanging down. She’s gorgeous and my daughter thinks so too.

I also bought an Italian Wall Plaque of the blessed Mary and Baby Jesus (possibly a Fontanini). It’s weird because I touched this piece last December while we were piking up a few items at Cheryl’s and placed it right back where I found it, as I got distracted by my daughter. It was at home that I realized that I didn’t purchase it. I was amazed to find it today, on the exact spot where I left it almost two months ago and I immediately grabbed it.
It’s such a beautiful vintage piece of Madonna and her beloved Child.

Cheryl carries a few Boudoir Dolls in very good condition with their original clothing and accessories. If you are interested in purchasing these dolls or know someone who will, please contact Cheryl for pricing information.

Prior to returning home, we made a last stop at Ikea to purchase some Chocolate, which is available in Dark, Milk, and Hazelnut and are 99¢ each or 3 for $2.49. Ikea® Food Chocolate bars are pretty much my next favorites after Godiva® and Ghirardelli®. We all enjoy them here at home as well as sharing them with Family and Friends.

Pink Tulips and Ghirardelli®

Today has been an awesome day all around as we woke up to a bright, warm sun shining day. Like every single morning, the first thing my toddler does is spoil both my husband and I with sweet kisses. She always tells me: “I like you Mommy. It’s you and me together forever.” I always fight the urge of shedding a tear or two when I am in her presence. But oh! How I love this darling little girl; she is so conscious and so affectionate.

My smart and energetic kindergartener had a Valentine’s Card exchange at school today and he said it was fun. I guess it’s always fun when Desserts, Snacks and Treats are involved. He can have it all as long as he keeps up with the fantastic job! I received very good news from his Teacher yesterday and I am so proud of him.

Above you can see the beautiful Pink Tulip bouquet I received from my better half this morning. I placed it on my gorgeous Vintage wood bottomed tray with a nature scene inlay featuring a bird perched on Bamboo and a 3″ high wicker surround. I also received a Ghirardelli® SQUARES™ Premium Chocolate Assortment Heart Tin (Milk Chocolate with Caramel Filling, Dark Chocolate with Raspberry Filling and Dark Chocolate with White Mint Filling), which the kids immediately owned. Great things come in small packages and I am very grateful for today.

To My Daughter

“I always thank God for you because of His grace given you in Christ Jesus.” ― 1 Corinthians 1:4 (NIV)

My little girl. My amazing and affectionate little girl turned 3 today! She came down with the stomach flu and a slight fever a few days ago and has recovered in time for her birthday, which she has been looking forward to celebrating. She has been straightforward about what she wants and postponing 2 and 3 on her list is the right thing to do, as she can be contagious for a few more days after recovery. Here’s her wish list:

  1. No Cake this year, just pink Cupcakes
  2. Go to the Movies
  3. Go to Disneyland (and meet ‘Mimi’, again)
  4. Pink and White balloons

I am blessed to be the one she calls “Mom”. I feel tremendously blessed to have a beautiful, healthy, smart and happy daughter that the Lord has blessed me with. Even though I birthed her, I know she belongs to the Lord and I am eternally grateful that He would trust me with her life. I hope I can live up to some of His expectations.

For her third birthday, we added a lot more to her Strawberry Shortcake collection by bringing in some gorgeous vintage dolls and accessories. She loved them all, but not as much as she loved her Just Like Home 40 Piece Pearlized Tea Set which we bought from Toys”R”Us®. We got something for big Brother too, who was so helpful in planning the surprise and doing the countdown. The party has been postponed …

I bought her first Pendant necklace: a Lamb! It’s a beautiful and fun Pendant necklace in a matching velour hinged Lamb box. The pendant hangs on an 18″ chain, it’s made of genuine European crystals and 18 kt gold finish. The pendant is part of an Animal series collection and you can get one for your child on PetCollection.com.

We were blessed with a beautiful, warm and peaceful day; filled with love, laughter, gifts, loving memories and lots of hugs and kisses. Everyone is grateful and content. There will be some storytelling in a little while and then we will watch movies for the rest of the night. Today is a good day.

A heartfelt Thank You, to Family and Friends, who made her day so special and fun!
