Pondering in The Garden

I haven’t seen a single bee around since last month and I don’t know if they will be coming back any time soon. Meanwhile, my female flowers need to be pollinated in order for the buds to become a pumpkin. Yesterday I pollinated the first female flower by hand. I figured that since pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anthers of a flower to the stigma of the same flower (or a different flower); then perhaps I could just cut the male flower, remove its petals and rub the male stamen’s pollen over the female stigma.

The pollinating process reminded me of all the things we often take for granted because someone of something else is in charge. Can you imagine how stressful life might become without the assistance of the bees? Can imagine hand pollinating each and every single one of your crop by hand? Let’s all help save the bees, starting with these 10 Simple Things YOU Can Do and clicking here to sign a petition to ban chemicals.

Yesterday, amongst other things, I found two Drawers from our old Kitchen Cabinets, which I cleaned and removed the knobs. I asked my husband to cut and attach three legs to its base and then spray paint the finish product. I replaced the original knobs with a set of drawer pulls I bought from Michael’s a few months ago.

I spent a peaceful moment in the garden today. I am off to spend a relaxing evening with the family.

Happy Gardening!

Cute Vintage Finds

Early this afternoon we returned to the Estate Liquidators to purchase what was left of the 1920’s-1940’s Vintage Chippendale Pull with cast iron bail a couple of weeks earlier (see them here). This time I made sure I took all the dismantled pieces of the drawers including those I left behind last time.

My husband found a couple of old gardening tools he’s been wanting to acquire for a long time. My boy was more interested in Shells and got a few for a craft project. As for my daughter, she found two of her favorite characters stuffed toys which she immediately grabbed. A ballerina Smurfette and Hello Kitty, both vintage. The Smurfette was produced by Applause, Inc. (founded as Wallace Berrie & Co., Inc) and is marked 1984 Peyo.

The Hello Kitty is a 1996 nylon plush doll and was distributed in the  United States by Sanrio, Inc.

As for me, I found a few things. The one I love the most is this tall Vintage Grey Smoke Glass Cylinder Vase.

My second favorite vintage find is a 1977 Lil’ Miz “Whisk-It” (Millet Grass Whisk-Broom) by Westwood Import Co., Inc. This beauty comes right on time as I will be making my Fall wreath in a few day and she will play an important part.

I am very grateful for my cute little vintage finds on this hot Saturday afternoon.

Vintage Chippendale Pulls

While driving around the city this morning we decided to make a stop at the Estate Liquidators. It’s always a delight visiting this little shop, especially the outdoor space where we’ve found beautiful pieces in the past. Our visit wasn’t any different from the previous ones as we’ve never left the shop empty handed. As I was admiring a multi-level wrought iron plant holder, I saw a set of gorgeous vintage drawers with Chippendale Pulls from the 1940’s out of the corner of my eye and I knew they were coming home with me. The Pulls are made from brass, they are charming, unique, a little rusty and show age worn patina.

I bought the drawers for the pulls, so when I removed them and saw the imprints they left into the wood I promised myself to restore the drawers and possibly used them as planters. From the shape (rounded front) and size of the wood (all original), the pieces appear to have come from a small desk or vanity. Once the pieces are put together, I might use it as a tray or to hold my indoor plant

I have so much to do this coming weekend and restoring a few gorgeous vintage drawers is one of the many projects on my list. Most likely going to the movies with the family.
