Sculpture: Guanyin Torso

JM Perez By JM Perez2 min read683 views

I am a lover of everything beautiful and pure. I love statues and I have a huge collection of Cherubs all around my Home (indoors and outdoors). When we were designing our backyard layout a couple of years ago, I knew I wanted to use a section of my backyard to create a Zen Garden. We started off by trying out two patterns with Yin Yang Symbols. Last year I bought three small Buddha Statues from the 99¢ Only Stores, which I displayed on my storage shed. Last month I bought a medium size Buddha from Pancho’s in Lucerne Valley, CA and today we picked up a life size torso of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, the Bodhisattva of Compassion (who promises to answer the cries and pleas of all sentient beings and to liberate them from their own karmic woes).

According to the website Taoism.net, a Bodhisattva is a being who is enlightened and ready to transcend the cycles of birth and death, but chooses to return to the material world in order to help other people reach the same level of enlightenment. This is the ultimate demonstration of pure compassion.

As much as I love beautiful things, I always make sure I do some research and talk to knowledgeable individuals before I bring anything (I don’t fully understand) into my Home. The first time I heard about the Bodhissatva of Compassion and actually saw a few pictures with her eleven heads and a thousand hands, I was freaked out and could not fathom such a transformation/sight until I read her story. From there I was on a quest to acquire more knowledge and more understanding. It’s so easy to judge someone or a culture without enough information.

Guanyin and the Thousand Arms (Wikipedia)

Despite strenuous effort, she realized that there were still many unhappy beings yet to be saved. After struggling to comprehend the needs of so many, her head split into eleven pieces. The buddha Amitabha, upon seeing her plight, gave her eleven heads to help her hear the cries of those who are suffering. Upon hearing these cries and comprehending them, Avalokitesvara attempted to reach out to all those who needed aid, but found that her two arms shattered into pieces. Once more, Amitabha came to her aid and appointed her a thousand arms to let her reach out to those in need.  Click here for additional information.

A few years ago, I watched a mesmerizing and breathtaking stage performance called Thousand-Hand Guan Yin by a group of hearing impaired females and males of the China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe (CDPPAT). Below is the amazing video of the performance, I hope you enjoy it.

There are other stories about Guanyin’s origins as recorded in Buddhist sutras, which you can read here (the first 13 chapters) and here (the last 16 chapters). Looking for the PDF version? Simply download it here

Horseshoe Art & Yard Sculptures

EPEngineer By EPEngineer2 min read1.1K views

This morning we took a trip to Lucerne Valley, CA mainly for sightseeing having taking this drive only twice before and coming across closed shops. Today everything was open and we got to take a look at the selections each stop had to offer.

Our first stop was at Pancho’s having stopped here before and seen their selection of Cement Sculptures/Statues and Water Fountains. They have their own molds and are very friendly. Their selections are either painted or unpainted giving you the option of how to proceed with your selection once purchased.
We decided on a 12 inch wall hanging mermaid decoration which was primed brown. After cleaning it and sanding a couple of spots, we painted it Soft Lavender. What a beautiful find!

We also bought a cement smiling Buddha Statue which is very detailed and very friendly. We decided to keep it plain and only did a clear coat on it to protect it. It is a nice addition to our current Buddha collection and we hope that it will bring peace and tranquility to our garden and will be one of the focal points of interest.

Our next stop was at a place down the road that offered a variety of metal sculptures, bottle art, antiques and horseshoe art made by Don Henry. Don is an artist who has been creating his own horseshoe art for years (flowers, kokopelli, butterflies, bird feeders and baths, bunnies, cowboys, plant stands and many others). His products are pure metal and will withstand the test of time. My wife fell in love with a rustic metal face made out of a cover from a model A cylinder cap and horseshoes and I just had to get it for her.

I hope that you will enjoy these places as much as we did. Every shop is an adventure in itself.

DIY: Sprinkler Robot Sculpture

EPEngineer By EPEngineer2 min read821 views

On a Saturday morning while in the garage organizing, we found some of the sprinklers that had been used on the home and which I replaced to run a Drip Watering System instead. They where not much by themselves but gave me an idea which had been working itself on my head for a while. I knew what I wanted it to look like and after talking to my son about it, We decided that it should stand on our front yard and that the eyes and chest should light up (Like Iron Man).

I used plastic piping for the fingers, some of the skinnier sprinklers for the arms and the thicker sprinklers for the legs. To screw everything together I used a drill bit to make a preliminary hole to make it easier to screw the pieces together easier. All together it took about 6 to 8 hours to assemble which some of that time used up by trial and error on part placement.

For the electronic part of the project I decided to use a Solar Light that I got from the local 99¢ Only Stores and which I hacked into to remove the LED and be able to run 4 LEDs from it. I placed all 4 LEDs in parallel and gave them plenty of wire to be able to run them from the Chest all the way to the Head for the eyes. I also attached a second battery holder in parallel to provide the system extra power.

My boy really enjoyed working on the project as well as working on the routing of the wiring which he called “Open Chest Surgery”. As you can see from the picture, the bot stands at about 4 foot.

Enjoy!
