DIY: Winter Bird Wreath

JM Perez By JM Perez1 min read589 views

Last year I made a simple Owl Wreath for Christmas. For this year, I decided to make a Winter Bird Wreath.

Materials Needed:

  • Wreath (I used a Foam Wreath)
  • Yarn
  • Bird (you can find one at a craft store)
  • Tiny Pine Cones
  • Ornamental Red Cherries
  • Felt Balls
  • Glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Choice Fabric for Bow
  • Decorative Frosted Needle Pine Branch

Step by step:

  • Once you’re done wrapping the yarn tightly around the wreath until it’s thick and all covered, hot glue the end
  • Glue the Felt Balls on the wreath, closely next to each other (use different sizes)
  • If you were lucky to find a bird already on a Needle Pine Branch, hot glue it on the felt ball at the top; otherwise get creative
  • Gather your Ornamental Red Cherries, Tiny Pine Cones, Decorative Frosted Needle Pine Branch and arrange them to your licking
  • Hot glue the arrangement on the bird’s abdomen and hot glue the finish product on the felt ball at the top
  • Use your Choice Fabric to tie a bow on the wreath and voilà!

Now, up to working on my Spring wreath.

Statue Reconstruction

EPEngineer By EPEngineer2 min read653 views

Five years ago, my wife found a beautiful Female Statue (Danza Del Flori by Giorgio Ceragioli) and knowing how much she loves statues and seeing the wonderful job she’s done surrounding our Home and Garden with relaxing zen sculptures, I agreed to get it for her. We paid for it and as we were about to load it into the back of the car, it collapsed and broke to pieces. After picking up all the pieces, we returned home with the promise to reconstruct it in the next following months. So days turned to weeks which turned to months and years went by.  About three years ago, I glue some of the major pieces, but that was all about it. Finally on Friday, I decided to resume the restoration process.

Materials/Tools Needed:

  • Brushes
  • DAP Cement filler
  • Clear Tape
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Hacksaw with metal-cutting blade
  • Putty knife
  • Wire brush
  • Loctite Epoxy Resin
  • Dremel
  • Diamond bits

How to proceed:

  • Clean the pieces you plan to glue.
  • I used Loctite Epoxy Resin which sets in 5 minutes to glue it together. It holds up to 3,000 Psi and worked for my statue.
  • I position the pieces and check that they fit together. I use clear packaging tape to hold the pieces together before gluing them.
  • Once I had a big section done it gets added to the overall pieces which is where I am currently.
  • The arms will be the last to be added and then I will fill in the cracks using DAP Cement filler.

Once the pieces have been glued and filled in I will spray paint the statue and place it at a location of our choice.

Cute Vintage Finds

Early this afternoon we returned to the Estate Liquidators to purchase what was left of the 1920’s-1940’s Vintage Chippendale Pull with cast iron bail a couple of weeks earlier (see them here). This time I made sure I took all the dismantled pieces of the drawers including those I left behind last time.

My husband found a couple of old gardening tools he’s been wanting to acquire for a long time. My boy was more interested in Shells and got a few for a craft project. As for my daughter, she found two of her favorite characters stuffed toys which she immediately grabbed. A ballerina Smurfette and Hello Kitty, both vintage. The Smurfette was produced by Applause, Inc. (founded as Wallace Berrie & Co., Inc) and is marked 1984 Peyo.

The Hello Kitty is a 1996 nylon plush doll and was distributed in the  United States by Sanrio, Inc.

As for me, I found a few things. The one I love the most is this tall Vintage Grey Smoke Glass Cylinder Vase.

My second favorite vintage find is a 1977 Lil’ Miz “Whisk-It” (Millet Grass Whisk-Broom) by Westwood Import Co., Inc. This beauty comes right on time as I will be making my Fall wreath in a few day and she will play an important part.

I am very grateful for my cute little vintage finds on this hot Saturday afternoon.

Vintage Chippendale Pulls

While driving around the city this morning we decided to make a stop at the Estate Liquidators. It’s always a delight visiting this little shop, especially the outdoor space where we’ve found beautiful pieces in the past. Our visit wasn’t any different from the previous ones as we’ve never left the shop empty handed. As I was admiring a multi-level wrought iron plant holder, I saw a set of gorgeous vintage drawers with Chippendale Pulls from the 1940’s out of the corner of my eye and I knew they were coming home with me. The Pulls are made from brass, they are charming, unique, a little rusty and show age worn patina.

I bought the drawers for the pulls, so when I removed them and saw the imprints they left into the wood I promised myself to restore the drawers and possibly used them as planters. From the shape (rounded front) and size of the wood (all original), the pieces appear to have come from a small desk or vanity. Once the pieces are put together, I might use it as a tray or to hold my indoor plant

I have so much to do this coming weekend and restoring a few gorgeous vintage drawers is one of the many projects on my list. Most likely going to the movies with the family.

Creative Ways to Use Box Spring

JM Perez By JM Perez1 min read777 views

Last weekend, I walked into a Vintage store and was taken aback by the use of an old box spring. There were two actually; one was used as a wall accent and the other as a ceiling light.

That got me thinking about the endless possibilities of an old box spring mattress: holders,  storage, wall accent and decor, gates and fences, trellises, garden swings, yard arts, centerpieces, ceiling light fixtures, room dividers, and so much more.
