Rebirth in The Garden

JM Perez By JM Perez2 min read505 views

After days of cold, high winds and dreary weather, the sun is finally coming through and I am able to get up, get out and get my gardening tools ready for Spring. I love new beginnings as it reminds me of a Rebirth in the Garden when Nature re-awakens and the plants suddenly become aware and start breathing. The days are getting slightly warmer and everything looks so lovely, even the unwanted weeds in the backyard.

The Sweet Almond Tree is starting to bloom. The Raywood Ash or Claret Ash Tree is budding (with wind-pollinated dark purple flowers opening). Daffodils, Daylilies, Violet Queen, Birgi® Lily, Belladonna Amaryllis, Hyacinth, Grape Hyacinth, Imprimis Bearded Iris, Tulips and other bulbs have been sprouting over the past few weeks.

I started weeding yesterday and I was amazed at how much I was able to accomplish. I have noticed that the best time for me to weed is a couple of weeks before Spring (when the soil is still slightly moist from rain and/or snow) and I always start early to have everything done before Summer (when brush fire warnings are high). Here in the High Desert we have a variety of weeds (most of which are Tumbleweeds) growing in our yards as well as the open land around us. It is much easier to pull them up when they are small because their thorns are still tender. As they mature, they break at their roots spreading their seeds on their way as they are driven about by the wind. Quite messy and dangerous. As funny as it is watching them spin around; it’s all laughs until a bunch of them end up in your yard, underneath your car or you get injured by the thorns.

Ideas for Tumbleweeds

Well, you know how the saying goes: “when you live with tumbleweeds, you end up finding uses for them.” Looking for decor ideas and unique inspirations for your Home? Check out how other people entertain themselves and or make a living using Tumbleweeds. I particularly like the Tumbleweed on Panel and the Living Tree Art.

How about Tumbleweeds to compliment a Flower Bouquet or to use as a lamp shade? Possibilities are endless.

Are you overwhelmed with the plants growing in your garden and can’t tell if they are weeds or not, if they are toxic or not, if they have healing properties or not? Are the plants looking so lovely that you are divided between keeping them or getting rid of them? You may find helpful information in the following links.

Happy Gardening!

Snow Day Closure

What a cold and windy day! I was awakened very early in the morning by a bright light coming through the window in the dark night. I slowly got out of bed, moved the curtain and as I took a peek through the blinds, I realized it was snowing! I instantly grabbed my camera, woke up the hubby, opened the front door and began taking pictures of the front yard. Such a beautiful sight, I whispered. Everything always looks better and cleaner when covered in white and this was no exception. We stood there, for a few minutes, watching the Snow fall. The magic continued for another hour and then the Snow began melting quite rapidly.

The School Principal called at around 5:00 AM to let us know that the School was closed for the day due to the Snow. That’s was a relief given that nothing was posted on the School’s website. The kids were a little disappointed that they missed the Snow because they really wanted to play in the Snow, make snow angels and build a Snowman as it was the case in 2011.

We are thankful to be Home, blessed by the company of one another and enjoying our favorite movies together.

One Erratic Day

Today has been the most erratic day of the year with a mix of strong/high winds, really low temperatures and very light rain, which gave us a light blanket of white powdery snow. Once the rain stopped and the sun came out, we found ourselves with a nice clear blue sky and a cold, windy atmosphere (the type that literally gets down to our bones and reminds us that we’re still alive). Even the lower Mountain elevations which are normally spared were covered in snow.

Though Gratitude should be expressed and applied on a daily basis, it is during days like these that we are truly grateful for having a roof over our heads and for having people who love us enough to care about our well being. I can only pray for everyone’s safety and for this erratic weather to end.

On a positive note,  the construction on the La Mesa & Nisqualli Road Interchange is progressing and we have been driving on some of the new constructed roads that are part of the overpass. This is very good traffic wise as it will tremendously help reduce the congestion on Bear Valley Rd and Palmdale Rd.

Just Another Day

This morning we took down all the Christmas decorations (both indoor and outdoor).
I started taking down most of the decorations (Christmas Church, Village and town people down as well as the Angels, Carolers and the Nativity Set) on Tuesday except the Christmas tree, which I finally took down this afternoon. I took one of the two outdoor Wreaths down on Friday and the last one on the front door came down today along with the rest. It feels like I just got the Christmas tree up and I am now taking it down; I wish Christmas could last just a little longer! I’m glad I had my cheerful and energized little helpers around to assist me.

It’s been windy and cold all week long that we shut off the exterior water valve to the irrigation system to protect the plants from frost and prevent property damage during this freezing weather.
So, after putting the Christmas Tree and decorations away, we had a fun craft activity with the kids late in the afternoon. We made a set of Bug Walkers, which we will share in the next post.

Late Afternoon Weather: Snow on the Mountains (view from our backyard).

It is raining tonight with a chance of snowfall.

2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Snow Storm (partial view of our front yard).

It snowed three times in 2008 (January, April and December). It skipped 2009 and snowed in January of 2010, January and February of 2011 as well as February and March of 2012.  The kids were looking forward to Snow and building a Snowman last December. I personally wasn’t looking forward to another Snow Storm and I am very thankful for the break, although the weather might decide otherwise. It’s astonishing how each year goes faster than the previous one.

By the time I realize it, it will be Valentine’s Day!
