DIY: LEGO Creations

EPEngineer By EPEngineer1 min read1K views

Today, after picking up my son from school and having lunch, I decided to pull out the huge box of mixed LEGOs that we had stored in his bedroom closet. Lately he wanted to build something that could carry items in it and he was able to build that today as you can see in the pictures below.

The LEGO Mail Truck/Carrier has two boxes with lids which face back and can hold tiny LEGO pieces.

The next three creations are various desert racers. He was so proud of his creations that he has not modified them since making them.

This two creations are made from spare parts that I had from previous LEGOs that I owned. He was thrilled when he saw them and like his own creations; has not modified them yet.

A Fun-Filled Day

Today we decided to cross some items of our to-do list and ran some errands in the morning. Once done and with a full day ahead of us we took to sight seeing around the Victorville area. After much curiosity, we decided to stop by World Concrete Precast on Mariposa Rd in Victorville, CA to check out the beautiful concrete pieces we have only been able to see from the freeway while driving in the area.

The selection of cement/concrete creations is amazing to say the least. If you can think of it; they probably have it or know where to get it for you. I will let the picture gallery speak for itself as you can probably spend a whole day checking out each item. The detail on each piece is amazing and the items that come painted are done really well. I fell in love with the brown five tier water fountain.

Once home, we decided to eat out in the patio and enjoy the beautiful weather and lack of wind that we were experiencing today. After a couple of minutes we heard the chirping of baby birds and decided to try our luck and try to catch them with the camera. As you can see below, we where successful. They are so small.

They seemed to be in between meals and every time we step out of the patio the mama bird flies away to draw the attention off her babies. This is the second year she uses this nest since she put it up about a year or two ago. We can not wait until they start to fly around on their own.

Controlling Burrowing Rodents

EPEngineer By EPEngineer3 min read933 views

Have you awaken in the morning to find dead plants around your home (plants which are leaning on their side). When we look around without seeing any evidence of burrowing rodents (such as the appearance of tunnels and exit holes with mounds of dirt around it), we simply put the blame on White Curl Grubs, which are known to eat plants roots and kill the whole plant in the process.

Pocket Gophers, Groundhogs, Badgers, Voles, Prairie Dogs, Muskrats,  Moles, Ground Squirrel, just to name a few are to blame. These animals are highly active during Spring and live underground using tunnels to get to their food source. They damage lawns, plants, vegetable gardens, foundation walls and give an ugly  appearance to landscaped areas. Muskrats can be found around swamps, lakes and streams with vegetation at close proximity. They feed on plant roots, stems, bulbs, grass, tender bark of young trees, nuts, seeds and fruits. Some feed on mussels, crustaceans, insects, fish, earthworms, snails and slugs.

For the past six years, we’ve only had to deal with Gophers mostly and Ground squirrels.

Ground squirrels are highly active during the day and thanks to sunny days and warm weather, we are constantly having uninvited guests. Fortunately for us and unfortunately for them, we wrapped chicken wire around our plants last years, protecting the plants we know for sure they love. Every now and then, I will catch a glimpse of a squirrel searching for food in the empty lot behind our Home.

Just like Yersinia Pseudotuberculosis in Rabbits which is transferable to Humans, Ground squirrels can harbor diseases harmful to humans such as bubonic plague which is transmitted to humans by fleas that the squirrels carry (killing about two-thirds of infected humans within 4 days without treatment). It is highly advised to use extreme caution when disposing a dead squirrel or notify public health officials.

We spent our first three years in the High Desert hunting Pocket Gophers after they nearly destroyed all of our plants. We’ve seen a couple of holes in the backyard with mounds of dirt around them. This afternoon I found a hole around our Agapanthus plants and I used a shovel to destroy the hole. These vertebrates will destroy anything on their path while creating holes leading them to their desirable food source. They are also capable of destroying irrigation lines and buried utility cables which are not properly protected.

How Can You Control Rodents?

They are so many options available out there. We’ve tried Gopher Gassers, Gopher Probe and poisons, none of which worked. The best and only method which has worked for us is traps with snapping latch placed near an opening (the latch is triggered when the animal steps on the trap) as you can see on the picture above. Some of these traps can be purchased at your local hardware stores and they can be hand made as well.

How Can You Protect Your Plants?

  • Use Raised Garden Beds
  • Raise your Planters/Pots (using pedestals or whatever you can think of)
  • Use Chicken Wire around your most cherished plants
  • Use Chicken Wire to protect the base of your plants (the roots) before planting them

Regardless of which rodents you are dealing with, always remember to be cautious around them.

A Drive Down Memory Lane

Yesterday being a warm day, we all agreed to drive down to Pomona, CA primarily for sightseeing and some vintage finds. On our way to our destination, we drove past places which meant so much to us.

Almost six years ago, my Son was born at this wonderful Hospital.

I spent the first three years of my Life, after High School, at the YMCA while attending college. The two last top windows on the picture used to be the room I occupied during my stay there.

The Metrolink Train Station with other connecting transits such as the Omnitrans, Foothill Transit and the Metrolink Connect Shuttle. This being a block away from the YMCA made every destination available to me.

The beautiful art work below is from La Bomba Vintage Shop. This was my second time visiting the shop since we moved out of Pomona, CA six years ago. The shop like everything else in the city has evolved and each visit brings in new discoveries like the following art creations there.

At times I find that a walk thru memory lane brings in new memories and allows us to enjoy part of our past. This places have always brought me enjoyment and wonder and as they change and the area evolves I will be vigilant to the changes and keep the memories fresh in my heart and mind. I hope that you all have favorite places that bring you and your family joy.
